Get a higher savings account rate

There's no reason to accept a smaller amount of interest from financial institutions or banks when with a little bit of shopping around online you can find great interest rates from a savings account, you can then use to build up a safety cushion in case unanticipated troubles come.

A number of places online can be found where you can compare shop with just a couple of clicks, and all the information you need will be at your disposal.

Once you find these web sites, just type the name into your web browser and go to the site. There you'll find a tool you can use to compare shop and get a list of savings accounts or money market accounts (MMA) you can look over and choose from.

You'll find a tab or link of some sort, usually at the top of the page identified as Checking & Savings, or something similar to that. Click on that and it'll begin the process for you. Look to see where it'll list things like 'high yield savings accounts,' and go there.

Another thing you'll want to watch for is whether it's a local or national option you're clicking or looking for. The best results will come from a national search, but maybe you're only interested in local banks, so you want to keep that in mind.

Don't settle for smaller interest rates

Keep savings account interest rate search relevant

To keep your search more relevant, see right up front if the search is identified as a certain amount. For example, some offer 10K MMA or 25K MMA, and if you're not looking at investing that much, just don't bother looking through them. Usually a savings account search option will be right there to see, and usually clicking that will bring up all the financial companies you want to sift through.

When you get a list of banks coming up, then look for something on top with APY or Annual Percentage Yield. You'll want to click that to find what you're looking for. Some online financial search sites also will descend the order so the highest rate is on top and so on down to the lower savings rates.

What else to search for when sorting through savings account interest rate data

This is where the real work of finding the right savings account for you is, as you now need to sort through the available information to find what works best for your needs.

Some of the things to look for when searching is if there are any minimum balances required, monthly fees, introductory rates and minimum balances needed to avoid monthly fees.

Other things to consider are whether it's FDIC insured or not, how soon you can withdraw funds after an electronic transfer, and service fees.
